Wisdom teeth are more likely than the other teeth to develop problems, so they should be assessed in the mid to late teens. Early evaluation, and removal if needed, can dramatically boost your oral health and guard against future issues.
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Located in the very back of the mouth, the wisdom teeth are the last to emerge. They are the least needed for chewing. They were vital to our ancestors, who consumed a largely raw plant-based diet, but modern people have smaller jaws that may not have room for them. Wisdom teeth often become impacted, emerge in a twisted position, or crowd the other teeth.
Are Wisdom Teeth Always Extracted?
For many years, wisdom teeth were routinely extracted. Today, though, they are carefully evaluated. If your mouth is healthy and your wisdom teeth emerge straight and uncrowded, there is no need for removal. However, problematic wisdom teeth tend to cause worsening oral health issues over time, so they should be extracted as soon as possible.
How Are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
Wisdom teeth extraction is a relatively simple procedure. You will receive a local anesthetic, and we can provide sedation ranging from mild (nitrous oxide) to deep (general anesthesia) if you desire.
First, we make a small incision in the gum tissue and cut away any bone that is over the tooth. Then, we grasp the tooth with dental forceps and gently pull it out. We may need to cut the tooth into pieces for easier removal, and you may receive dental sutures. We can remove one, some, or all wisdom teeth during the same procedure.
What to Expect Afterward
Although many people are afraid of having their wisdom teeth removed, there is nothing to fear with modern techniques and technology. Minor bleeding, swelling, and facial bruising are common, and typically resolve within a day or two. If we give you antibiotics or prescription painkillers, be sure to take them as instructed. It is far easier to stay ahead of any pain than to fight it once it sets in. You will receive detailed instructions on such topics as oral hygiene, eating, drinking, and smoking. Carefully following these instructions should allow you to return to work within 72 hours. Of course, if you have any unusual symptoms, call us right away.
